What Is Tui Na?
Tui Na (pronounced twee-nah) is a form of therapeutic bodywork rooted in East Asian Medicine. Often described as a type of medical massage, Tui Na uses skilled, hands-on techniques to relieve pain, release tension, improve movement, and support the body’s natural healing process.
Unlike a purely relaxation-focused massage, Tui Na is a clinical modality. It’s applied with intention, guided by the same diagnostic frameworks used in acupuncture and other East Asian medical practices, to address specific patterns of tension, restriction, and imbalance in the body.
How Tui Na Works
Tui Na practitioners use a variety of hands-on techniques — including pressing, kneading, rolling, stretching, and targeted manipulation — to work with the body’s soft tissue, joints, and channels of movement and energy.
The goal is to:
- Encourage healthy circulation
- Release areas of tension and restriction
- Restore smoother, more efficient movement patterns
- Calm the nervous system
- Support the body’s ability to recover and rebalance
Because it’s guided by East Asian medical theory, Tui Na looks beyond the spot that hurts. It considers how tension, movement, and stress patterns connect across the whole body.
What Tui Na Can Help With
Tui Na may be a helpful part of your care if you’re dealing with:
- Pain, stiffness, or muscle tension
- Limited range of motion or movement restriction
- Recovery from injury, training, or high physical demands
- Stress-related tension held in the body
- Compensatory movement patterns that lead to strain
- A desire to build resilience and move more comfortably
It’s frequently used alongside acupuncture and rehabilitation to support recovery and functional movement.
